Most of the Photographs in our Collection are 19th century albumen prints; the most common formats are Cartes-de-visite and Cabinet cards.

The carte-de-visite portrait, measuring approximately 4″x 2.5″ inches appeared in 1854 by Andre Disderi in France and rapidly gained popularity. Cabinet photographs measure roughly 5.5″ x 4″ inches. Nineteenth Century photographers mainly used the albumen technique. This process was introduced in 1850 and was widely used until 1920.

From the Vollmer archives, we have selected characteristic works of the most important Venezuelan photographers such as Jose Antonio Salas, Salas & Martinez, Prospero Rey, Federico Carlos Lessmann, Pedro Ignacio Manrique, Cordiglia and Julio Santos Michelena.

You will also find works from France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Great Britain, Spain, Japan, and a large selection of German photographs taken by Bieber, Maas, Mocsigay; other photographs were taken in Cuba by Narciso Mestre, Cohner, Charles de Forest Fredricks who traveled extensively taking pictures with Augusto Daries.

Other works come from important studios in the United States, such as Sarony & Kurt in New York, Broadbent & Taylor in Philadelphia.
