The Iconographical Archetype of Bolívar (1984)
Alfredo Boulton: The Iconographical Archetype of Bolívar. Caracas, Macanao Editions, 1982, 144 illustrated pages.
All the facial features of the left profile of Bolívar, the angle of his nose, the shape of his mouth, the protruding cheek bones, the high eyebrows, the wrinkles on his forehead, the layout of his hair, the depth of his sockets, the eyelids and a certain sadness in his look, undoubtedly identify Roulin with Tenerani’s work (…) By carefully observing the changes Bolivar’s face underwent as a result of a serious illness contracted while in Guayaquil in 1829, we can confirm that indeed a dramatic transformation of his appearance took place. Thenceforth, his physique changed rapidly, as can be seen in the magnificent sketches done by José María Espinosa upon Bolívar’s return to Bogotá in 1830.
