Portraits of Bolívar (1956)
Alfredo Boulton: Portraits of Bolívar. Caracas, Editorial Arte, 1956, 204 illustrated pages.
His true looks – as frequently happens with great men – have been distorted over time, as he became more and more popular, which to a certain extent is comprehensible, because of the lack of a well conducted iconography and because of the indiscriminate copying of portraits of refutable appearance. If today we were to run into the revived Liberator on the street, we wouldn’t distinguish him. Perhaps his eyes – his glance – would startle us but we would not recognize this rather short man of delicate features, tanned complexion, curly hair, large forehead, vivid glance, straight nose, small hands, high-pitched voice and quick gestures, walking by hastily, as being the son without equal of Caracas.
